Description

White marble bust of Emperor Alexander II wearing uniform, shoulder boards with cypher of Nicholas I, order around neck, St. George cross on right, and star of an order on left. Signed: M. Чижовъ 1891. Initially stood in the Krasiński Palace and later was acquired at an auction in Warsaw, Poland by Sergei L'vovich Voitsekhovskii.

History Note

Bust was erected in the Krasiński Palace to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the institution of judicial statute (судебный устав) in the Kindom of Poland by Alexander II in 1864. Remained in the palace until 1915. Was purchased by S.L. Voitsekhovskii around 1935 at an auction, where the bust was labeled as "ненужный камень" ("useless stone").
