Description

Folding diptych icon. Painted in oil paint, in silver frame topped by ogee arch. Full-length icon of Apostle Peter holding book and keys on left panel, Apostle Paul holding book and sword on right panel, each with cloisonne enamel scrolling foliate border. Blue enamel eight-pointed cross on front cover. On back cover is engraved inscription: Гренадерскому Саперному | Баталiону | Благословенiе въ походъ | отъ | Шефа | 1904 ("To the Grenadier Sapper Battalion, a blessing from the Chief 1904"). Given to Colonel Sergei Mikhailovich Vasiliev before the batallion's leaving for Manchuria during the Russo-Japanese War by Grand Duke Peter Nikolaevich (1864-1931).
