Description

Jetton of the Red Cross Community Hospital of Grand Duchess Elizaveta Fedorovna. Silver, enamel. Riveted 2-piece construction. Rhombus-shaped jetton with guilloche enamel Red Cross emblem. Above and below cross is engraved inscription: Община | Св. Елисаветы ("Commune of St. Elizabeth"). Superimposed on the top is the crowned cypher of Grand Duchess Elizaveta Fedorovna. On reverse is engraved inscription: И.М. | Ольеву | 1903. The St. Elisabeth Commune of Medical Nurses operated as part of the Russian Red Cross under the auspices of Grand Duchess Elizaveta Fedorovna. The silver jetton was issued by its Funding Committee; requirements for the award included not only donating at least 10 rubles to the community, but also performing a certain amount of work as a volunteer. Some are known to have been awarded to foreigners.
